Advising and Supporting Families on Educational Options

Philosophy
The phrase "too many students fall through the cracks" has almost become a cliché. Classroom sizes continue to grow along with the ratio of students to available guidance counselors. Often, exceptionally bright students go unchallenged and their motivation dims. Students in special circumstances find they cannot keep up and their frustrations result in acting out behavior that impacts their friends and families... sometimes whole communities. Educational opportunities can be lost forever and the lives lived are less than fulfilling.
I believe every student can be helped and their potential fully realized when appropriate matches with educational settings can be found. Our visits to schools throughout the northeast and across America have exposed us to approaches, faculties and facilities that meet nearly every challenge. We believe that focused attention on past records, skilled listening, testing and a thorough knowledge of available resources enable us to help our clients find again, or perhaps for the first time, the joy of learning.
In our intensely competitive world the most suitable education for each person should be a birthright. In the meantime however, we are committed to guiding our clients in directions we believe work best for them and their families.

What I Do
Visit and evaluate schools which address the needs of students in special circumstances

Assemble a portfolio of schools considered worthy of consideration by our clients

Meet with families to discuss each special situation

Assess students' school and counseling records, including teacher references

Refer for testing, evaluation and counseling when appropriate

Determine school requirements needed to meet the needs of each student/family

Match requirements to schools in our portfolio or when necessary, seek out new schools more closely meeting the family's needs

Recommend schools to families and arrange for family visits

Coach students to relieve interview stress and offer tips to maximize each school visit

Assist students and their families with the applications process

Follow up periodically with students, families and schools for at least one year

Who I Am
Elizabeth Jamieson has for many years owned and managed Recovery Counseling Services, a private agency counseling adolescents and adults in Syracuse and Auburn. Elizabeth's interest in educational resources began in 1991 when she found herself serving as her own family's consultant in its search for an appropriate school for her son. Before a decision was reached on the right school for Eric, Elizabeth had performed most of the casks now associated with the profession. Conversations with Jay Gullo over a period of time convinced each of the need for a comprehensive consulting practice in Syracuse. Elizabeth Jamieson earned her Bachelors Degree at the University of Maine and pursued graduate studies at Syracuse University and Rutgers.
