Charleston, which was founded in 1788 and incorporated in 1818, is located on the West side of the state. It has an estimated population of 57, 287 people and an approximate size of 44 square miles. The economy is primarily made up of services, wholesale and retail trade and government. It is home to West Virginia State College, West Virginia Institute of Technology, the University of Charleston and West Virginia Graduate School.
