Norfolk was incorporated as a borough in 1736. It is located
91 miles from Richmond, in the south east corner of the state.
In 1845, Norfolk was incorporated as a City. It has an estimated
population of over 260,000 people, and supplies water to almost
700,000 including Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, U.S. Navy as well
as maintaining water service to Norfolk's own residents. It has
an approximate size of 66 square miles. The city flower is the
Azalea, the city tree is the Crepe Myrtle. It is home to the world's
largest harbor, and the world's largest navy base. It's major
industries besides the military, include port-related industry,
finance, manufacturing, shipbuilding and repair, educational and
medical services, conventions/tourism and retail trade.
