Virginia, which is known as the Old Dominion, was admitted into the Union on June 25, 1788. The State Capitol is Richmond. Another major city is Virginia Beach. According to the latest census, Virginia has an estimated population of 7,078,515 people and an approximate size of 42,769 square miles. The economy is primarily made up of tobacco, agriculture, trade, tourism, services, government and pharmaceuticals. The State Flower is the Dogwood and the State Bird is the Cardinal. “Sic Semper Tryannis” (which means thus always to tyrants) is the State motto.
