Texas, which is known as the Lone Star State, was admitted into the Union on December 29, 1845. The State Capitol is Austin. Other major cities include Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston and San Antonio. According to the latest census, Texas has an estimated population of 20,851,820 people and an approximate size of 268,601 square miles. The economy is primarily made up of construction, manufacturing, petroleum and machinery. The State Flower is the Bluebonnet and the State Bird is the Mockingbird. “Friendship” is the State motto.
