Rapid City, which was founded in 1876 and incorporated in 1882, is located on the West side of the state. It has an estimated population of 54, 523 people and an approximate size of 35 square miles. The economy is primarily made up of agriculture, wholesale and retail trade, services and government. It is home to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology , West Dakota Vocational Technical Institute and the National College.
