Providence, which was established in 1636 and incorporated in 1832 is located in the center of the state. It has an estimated population of 160, 728 people and an approximate size of 18.5 square miles. The economy is made up of manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade and services. It is home to Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence College, Johnson and Wales University and Rhode Island College.
