The state of New York was admitted into the Union on July 7, 1788. Its’ Capitol City is Albany. Other major Cities are Buffalo, New York City, Rochester and Syracuse. According to the latest census, New York has an estimated population of 18,976,457 people and an approximate size of 54,475 square miles. New York, which is known for it's wholesale and retail trade, transportation, manufacturing, foreign trade and publishing, was nicknamed the Empire State. The State Flower is the Rose, and the Bluebird is the States’ bird.

"Excelsior" (which means ever upward) is the State's motto.
