Welcome... to Onondaga New York! The Town of Onondaga was established in the year 1798. It has an estimated population of 18,000 people, and an approximate size of 65 square miles. It is located on the lower west side of Onondaga County, east of the Village of Marcellus. The main routes of travel are State Routes 173 and 175. Its Hamlets are Cedarville, Howlett Hill, Naverino, Nedrow, Onondaga Hill, Sentinal Heights, Southern Onondaga, Southwood, Split Rock and Taunton. In 1797, the state legislature authorized a lottery to finance the Great Seneca Turnpike. The first inhabited areas were Onondaga Hollow, (now the valley of Syracuse) and Onondaga Hill. Ephriam Webster was the first permanent white settler in an Indian inhabited area. He welcomed the family of Asa Danforth and Comfort Tyler, who gave birth to the first white baby, Amanda Danforth in 1789. Today, the town covers miles of sprawling farmland and suburban areas sprouting new residential communities. |
