Welcome... to Chittenango New York! The Village of Chittenango was incorporated in 1842. It has an estimated population of 4,700 people and an approximate size of 2.4 square miles. The main routes of travel are State Routes 5 & 13. It is located east of Fayetteville. Its name means "waters that run north." The first settlers were attracted here because of the fertile soil, gypsum & limestone, and the abundant energy which came from the creek. Throughout the years as business developed in the community, so did the churches, cultural & civic groups. Chittenango is still a thriving community with a steadily growing population. It is known for being the birthplace of L. Frank Baum, the author of the Wizard Of Oz. The Baum home is located at the southern edge of the village. Each May, the Oz Fest takes place to celebrate his birth. Be sure to walk the "Yellow-Bricks" which are along the Main Street of Chittenango. |
