Welcome...to Brewerton, New York!
Brewerton has an estimated population of 2,900
people. It is located north of Cicero, and its main routes of
travel are State Routes 11 and 81. In 1615, Samuel de Champlain
and ten Frenchmen stood upon the north shore of the Oneida River
and beheld the present site of Brewerton. This was a popular area
for the Indians because of its communications center and fishing.
In 1759, Fort Brewerton was built on the west end of Oneida Lake.
The first settler in Brewerton was Oliver Stevens, who came in
1789. Three years later, the State Legislature authorized the
construction of a highway between Brewerton and the first Ward
of Salina. This was to become "The Salt Road," or known
as Route 11 today. The strip between Brewerton and Central Square
was abandoned in 1873 due to the creation of The Syracuse Northern
Railroad. Three bridges were later built to span the Oneida River,
and the Route 81 bridge was the longest prestressed girder bridge
in the Western Hemisphere, which opened in 1961.
