Detroit, which was founded in 1701 and incorporated in 1815, is located on the East edge of the state, East of Lansing. It has an estimated population of 1, 027, 974 people and an approximate size of 138.7 square miles. The economy is primarily made up of services, trade, manufacturing, finance, insurance and real estate. It is home to Wayne State University and the University of Detroit-Mercy.
