Kansas, which is known as the Sunflower State, was admitted into the Union on January 29, 1861. The State Capitol is Topeka. Other major cities include Kansas City and Wichita. According to the latest census, Kansas has an estimated population of 2,688,418 people and an approximate size of 82,282 square miles. The economy is primarily made up of agriculture, oil products and mining. The State Flower is the Native Sunflower and the State Bird is the Western Meadowlark. “As Astra Per Aspera” (which means to the stars through difficulty) is the State motto.
