Des Moines, which was founded in 1843 and incorporated in 1857, is located on the South West side of the state. It has an estimated population of 193, 187 people and an approximate size of 75.3 square miles. The economy is primarily made up of services, trade, finance, insurance, real estate, government and manufacturing. It is home to Drake University and Grand View College.
