Georgia, which is known as the Empire State of the South, and the Peach State, was admitted into the Union on January 2, 1788. The Capitol City is Atlanta. Other major cities include Marietta and Savannah. According to the latest census, Georgia has an estimated population of 8,186,453 people and an approximate size of 59,441 square miles. The economy is primarily made up of textiles, manufacturing and agriculture. The State Flower is the Cherokee Rose and the State Bird is the Brown Thrasher. “Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation” is the State motto.
