Birmingham, which was established in 1871 and chartered in 1864, is located North of Montgomery in the center of the state. It has an estimated population of 265, 968 people and an approximate size of 148.5 square miles. The economy it primarily made up of services, government, wholesale and retail trade. It is home to the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Samford University and Birmingham-Southern College.
